Internet Explorer version 6

Options
Can you help?

I have trawlled through the help pages on microsoft's web-sites and can't find anything of use, but hopefully you guys can.

I am running Internet Explorer version 6 on the Windows XP platform. At present I am experiencing some severe difficulties with the programme.

When I access certain web-sites (particularly my university remote e-mail access which is outlook web-access 2003) it becomes no longer possible to close Internet Expolrer. Also, keyboard shortcuts no longer work and the delte button ceases to function, but backspace continues to work.

I have run Norton Anti-virus and various spy-ware programmes and none detect any problems. I run zonealarm and also placed my computer behind the standard microsoft xp firewall 2 weeks ago.

If you have any ideas how I can prevent this from happening, please post them!

Thanks in advance

Part of the problem could be you are using XP's firewall as well as Zonealarm. Often one firewall will conflict with another. I suggest it might well be useful to turn off XP's firewall and see if this helps.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.
  • Unfortunately I doubt this will help, as the problems I am experiencing have been in existence prior to putting the XP firewall in place.

Have you visited http://www.windowsupdate.com and applied all the various security updates and service packs?

Doing this may replace some files that may be causing you problems. It's worth a try! ::)
  • I have updated and installed windows update patches etc. I am really confused as to why this has come about, but thanks for helping.
  • Do you have a popup blocker in place?

I am just thinking that perhaps a 'popunder' window may be causing the problem - bit of a long shot admittedly.

If you need one, the Google Toolbar works fine for me.

what version of IE are you running

(click on help , then about)

i used to let windows xp update auotmatically, when IE 6 sp1 patch came out it was very buggy...... and caused em greif similarly to what you are having
i then removed it IE 6 - sp1 patch and everything was ok.

I have since reapplied it, and also some extra fixes, which corrected the problem.
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)
  • I run IE 6.0 with SP1 and various other updates - so this could be the root of my problem! BUt how do I remove SP1?

    Thanks for your help.
