Hi .I've recently got into photography and have decided that I want to keep a record of my work I'm leaning towards disc but do I use DVDS or CDS ,I've never done it before so I'm not sure which way to go and do the files have to be as big as possible ,when I upload to flickr I downsize my files should I keep them the original size for disc -what do I need are they called CD-R or something like that.
I just need some advice if you put them on CDS can you look at them on TV.
Or what about these digital photo frames is it worth doing things that way-I'd be grateful for any advice please.

Cd's and DVD's, no not yet you would need thousands to copy to disc. Wait until you have a CD full then burn. CD is 700MB and DVD 4.7GB
You can view them on any screen you like really that's up to you.
Keep images in RAW format would be best. Larger files take more space.0 -
I always back mine up to DVD and an external hardrive, I have had harddrives fail on me in the past, so now I also backup to the cloud. An excellent one I use is Picasa it is free and so easy to back up to a google account although you are only allowed 1gb online but thats not a problem as all you do is create another account. the software is free to download and its a great library for all your pictures google it.

Depends on your camera, dearer ones tend to have RAW option, cheaper ones jpg
If your camera does take RAW then keep them in that format as "masters", but make a copy in jpg for general uploading etc
I second the advice about using external hard drive, you can get decent 1Tb for around £60 +. Espcially if using RAW, they can be huge filesEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0 -
PC World (usually hate them) had 1TB drives for £50 over the summer.
I normally have a DVD backup, and backup onto an external drive. RAW files are always kept, unless I've edited I'm usually not too fussed on keeping the JPEG, as I can always convert.
RAW files can be huge, s if you are going to store on DVD, it's worth having a system in place- store by week, month etc.0 -

If you downsize the file permanently, you'll never be able to upsize it again to the same quality. Keep it in its original size.
There are doubts about the permanence of CD and DVD, and hard drives can fail as well, so my best advice is to backup on CD or DVD AND Hard Diskpennyshahin wrote: »I just need some advice if you put them on CDS can you look at them on TV.
That will depend on your DVD player (if that's what you're going to use to play them back). Many DVD players will slideshow JPGs, but possibly not RAW filespennyshahin wrote: »Or what about these digital photo frames is it worth doing things that way-I'd be grateful for any advice please.
Photoframes work from memory cards, and are primarily a display medium, not a storage medium. The memory card is the storage medium.0 -
I put all my photos from travelling onto one DVD - took loads of them. I also use photobucket and a back up harddrive for them too.."If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0

ebuyer have a 1.5tb external hard drive for just over £60 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/244629
hotmail do 25gb of free online storage (although they do still force you to use IE to batch upload your files - upto 200 file at a time and up to 50mb each file - remember to check your broadband tariff for FUP)Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
Thanks for advice if I get CDS how many jpeg photos which each one hold as I'd like to edit some photos ie black and white etc and be able to watch them back, and I was looking at getting a 16GB flash drive how many photos would that hold.0

This will hold alot of pictures but it depends on your camera and the complexity of the pictures being taken. Megapixel and size of print are factors.
In rough order of magnitude it will hold between 3,000 (10 MP) to 14,000 (3MP) pictures.0
