hi.
i am having a lot of trouble getting a good deal on car insurance. i am getting ridiculuous quotes of 5 grand per year for a corsa with a 1.2 litre engine and 8 grand for a fiesta that had a 1.25 litre engine. its ridiculuous. these quotes were from swinton young drivers website. i am 17 years old. can anyone help. i am a very sensible driver that wants a car.

There are no 'good deals' for 17 year olds im afraid.
I paid £1200 p.a. for my 990cc E reg nissan Micra worth £100 in 2001. And i had pass plus!0 -
Insurance depends on where you live, whether male or female, age, occupation etc. etc. It is not just rated on the group of car.
By the sounds of it you are a 17 year old male living in what insurers deem a high risk area - have a look at all the other threads on here - recent thread from Jake's Gran highlights everything you are asking.
You may think the quotes are ridiculous, but from an insurers perspective they reflect the risk they are being asked to take on and as insurance is a pool, the actions of the few in that age group reflect on the many.0 -

They reflect the profit, the bonuses, the dividend, the commision to brokers, and the fact you have no choice but to buy it at any price.0 -
Yes but don't also forget the claims payments, which in the case of accidents over recent years have been pretty big! Insurers don't only get profits from motor it is from their whole book and underwriters cannot continuously write one book at a loss cross subsidised by the rest!0

The best thing to do would be to get a parent to insure the vehicle and have yourself as a named driver on it. Better still if the parent has maximum NCD to use on it.0

They also make a lot of money by referring accidents to claim management companies, so they're probably mainly to blame for this.0 -

OP , please note that the information given to you by Quote as above will only be legal if your parent insures the car as the main driver and actually is the main driver !
What Quote is advising you to do is lie to the insurance company and tell them that your parent is the owner and main user of the car and then you to be the named driver but actually it will be your car and you driving it most of the time!
This is known as "fronting" and is illegal . If you go down this route and heaven forbid have an accident , the insurance company could find out and this would render your policy void meaning that there is a chance they would not pay out for your claim ! It is also worth noting that even if you did do this , your parent would not have full NCD to use of the vehicle anyway if they already own and insure their own car as NCD can only be used on one vehicle.
Please read some of the other posts on the board , a lot of other insurance experts also highlight just how wrong it is to front.
I understand that you are young and that you want to get a car on the road but this is not the way to do it .
Have you got some quotes with you as the main driver but adding your mum on as a named driver ? If she has a clean licence then this may also lower your premium . If you mum doesnt drive or has points on her licence etc , any other older female would do . it doesnt even matter if they would not be driving your car.
Try a quote like this and let us know what it does to prices. The loopy one has gone :j0 -
You can however add your parents as named drivers as that may reduce your insurance slightly (make sure you are still the main driver though)0

You missed your smiley indicated that your post was sarcastic as I am sure you were not actually encouraging them to start fronting.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA).
