National Insurance Number Query

I have just filled in the online form for claiming Job Seekers Allowance, and have been told that the National Insurance number that I have been paying all my contributions to over the past 20 odd years, is not recognised!!!

How do i get this sorted and what are the consequences of this!!

Any advise would be gratefully received

Cheers

Donna

there is also the possiblity you have over time transposed figures, which means that you have been paying into the wrong account, do you have anything like your original NI card? if so check that is the one that you have been using. It does happen, if it is the case that numbers have been transposed then it is possible for somebody to refer the case to the NI department in newcastle and they can do a full investigation which you will need to give a detailed working history so that the conts can be transfered over. In most cases the last letter is not always needed to bring information up on the screens

Thanks for that, at least you have not been given a temporary number (which ends in F or M). These are no longer supposed to be used but people were given them and never told to get a proper account, so their NI payments were going into a black hole.

thanks for all of your advise. I went to the sing on interview and the lady at the Job Centre informed me there was nothing wrong with my National Insurance Number as it was on the system!!!

She's not sure what the guy at the Department of Work and Pensions was looking at, but it probably sums it up that he told me to be at the Job centre for 9.40am when they told the Job Centre that i would be there at 11.40am, I swiftly told them that I was not willing to wait and I would have to pay extortion for there incompetence in parking charges. I was in and out within an hour!!!

Once again thanks for reading my thread, and thanks for all of your advise.
