Advice on painting oak kitchen please

Hi, went to look at new kitchens yesterday but disappointed with the quality so thought I'd look into having my old ones painted. Would I need a specialist or would a regular decorator be the person to contact? Also want new work tops, flooring and appliances and to move a couple of cupboards so am I wasting time having it done it seperate bits or should I just have the whole room dedone? Any advice greatly received.

    Hi maimee

we had our kitchen cupboards painted by a company ( a small family business ) 5 years ago, It cost us about £1300 ,we do have a lot of cupboards !! as it is a large kitchen

we were advised to have them overpainted in a special lacquer after painting ,to help protect them against stains etc.

they are chipping in a few places ,but overall are still great

we also had new worktops, sink, taps ,tiles, door/cupboard handles etc probably cost us about £3000 in total for the whole project, but thousands of pounds cheaper than a completely new kitchen,

It was worth doing for us as the units are solid sycamore and good quality not mdf !!

It has been the best transformation ever for us ,although I did shop around for deals on sinks etc

It took about a week for one person to paint the cupboards, when we get round to repainting them again I will get a local decorator to do them who has done other work for us,

    regards Jazz
  • Thanks Jazz. Did they have to do anything to treat the wood before painting? I assume our oak one's will have been waxed or something before.

you can use normal paint such as dulux satinwood or |farrow and ball eggshell
obviously you will need to make sure that the doors have a good sand down and are free of grime - use sugar soap and a scourer and then primed with a supergrip primer - see the zinsser range http://zinsseruk.com/shop/Product.aspx?cId=130&pgId=355

    Hi Maimee

yes they did sand a bit and then primed them with some paint before painting the final colour. (Im so technical !! ha ha )
what I didnt mention before ,is I have painted a bookcase with some cupboard makeover paint, it was either dulux or crown paint ,anyway it went on like a dream.
I did do about 4 thin coats and took my time ,it has lasted well on the bookshelf and hasnt chipped at all, so I would definitely use that paint next time my kitchen cupboards need repainting
