Dental Implant Nightmare

Hi everyone :)

I'm a long time lurker on these boards, and this is my first ever post. Am having a real problem with my tooth and would very much appreciate any help/advice anyone could offer!

I have recently been told that I need an implant doing for one of my front top teeth, and that this is not available on the NHS unless you fall into certain specific groups (which I do not). My only other option would be to have a denture, which would still cost £198 on the higher band NHS rate, and which I am very loath to do at the age of 26!

I've been ringing round a few dentists in Manchester to get quotes for the work, and the general price range privately seems to be around the £2000 - £2500 mark. As I am still a student, I really cannot afford that sort of money. I am aware that you can set up monthly payment plans with some dentists but that this is subject to status, and I would not pass a credit check. My partner is, however, willing to do this and take out a payment plan in her name.

Is this something that would be possible? Or, alternatively, does anyone know of a dentist (anywhere in the UK) that does implants for less? I have saved up about £1000 towards the treatment.

Would really appreciate ANY help or suggestions, as I am currently walking around with a badly broken, unsightly crown which I have to reset in place with an emergency dental kit around five times a day! Thanks

Ask your dentist if a Maryland bridge would be suitable. It's a bridge that is stuck onto your other teeth without them being drilled ( or only minimally) .

It normally is not permanent but can last quite a few years . It may give you time to finish saving for an implant. It won't be available on the NHS but all NHS dentists should be able to offer it privately, normally around a couple of hundred pounds. Alternatively have the denture (you would probably need one anyway for a few months whilst the implant heals and before a final crown is fitted.) and carry on saving.

I have not tried it myself. but I have read somewehre that some people go to Eastern Europe (e.g. Poland, Czech republic, Slovakia, etc) to do this treatment. Which countries I do not know probably other memmbers could point it out

Nowadays, it could be much simple as a lot of budget airlines is available.

I lost a front tooth years ago and used a denture for a few years, wasn't too bad really.
Then paid for an implant (in the manchester area) costing about £2.k, really pleased with the outcome.
Probably wouldn't advise comprimising quality or convenience though. Save up and have local implant would be my advice.
  • For goodness sake don't go abroad for treatment unless you are able to do several trips. Any dentist worth while can NOT do an implant in one procedure. My own one cost £2000 which is a fortune but I did have to have several planned visits.

  • My sister had an implant done at the Dental School in Glasgow and it was significantly cheaper than having it done elsewhere - it was about 15 years ago though so I can't remember exactly how much it was.

I'm guessing for Manchester the equivalent would be here

Except for cancer, trauma and certain facial anomalies eg being born with many missing teeth implants will not be provided at dental hospitals or anywhere else on the NHS.

Nowadays, with Budget airlines, the return flight from UK to Czech, Poland, Slovakia is considerably cheaper than a train from Manchester - London, London - Glasgow, etc.

TBH I do not really believe that the treatment that you get in Manchester or London is much better than what you will get in Warsaw or Prague.
Some dentists in the UK is origin or educated in India but they maintain the same standard with UK own grown dentists. Is not that it is much better than you allow yourselves to be treated by apprentice, if you want to do it cheap in the UK. But If you are happy to pay £2,000.00 for one tooth than do it in the UK.

As part of EU they need to maintain the minimum standard.
But Like I said, I have not tried it myself but I will definitely try if there is a need for it.

That may be true (but I'm not sure that it is).

But even so, despite all EU 'rules' I'm sure you're aware that some countries (like ours) enforce every comma and full stop, whereas other countries are a little more 'relaxed' about it all.

If anything should go wrong, you'd also be up against the legal system of a foreign country, and different ideas about professional insurance.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
  • Hi I also have a friend that has been to Dentale Shrewsbury (which they said was FAB) they have a clinic in Bristol too now!

or I have also heard of the Implantium Network they offers a fixed price that is cheaper than the norm I believe it is regional so they might have someone nearer to you

    Good luck
