Wireless Security

After seeing a programme last night on tv, (not sure if it was call the real hussle or scammers) it showed how easy it is for people to get into your wireless connections, for those who did not see it they showed a man the holiday he had just booked told him where he was going and on what dates and from which airport which means they know when the house would be empty.
Anyhow they gave some suggestions on how to make your connection safe but I was not in a position to be able to write it down and this morning I can't remember.
Please can any technies out there tell me what settings I need to check and where to find them, si I can ensure my connection is safe, to be honest I think I am ok as I am using a BT encrypted unit which if I am correct stops people hacking, having said that they did mention on the programme they bought some cheap software to allow them access so now I am not sure if I am safe.
Any help would be appreciated, as I am sure there are many people on here who could do with the answers

The basics for wifi security are.
1. ensure you change the logon username and password of your router.
2. Change the SSID and ensure it's hidden
3. Use WPA encryption
4. Set the wireless power to minimal acceptable use
5. Set MAC access list (although MAC's can be cloned does make it harder)
