Heating timer... dilemma
Hi everyone,
Which do you think would be cheapest: to have our gas central heating on continuously for an hour or two in the morning and evening to heat up the house or to have it on intermittently (on for 15 minutes, off for 15 minutes alternating) for a longer period of time? It is a big 6 bedroom student house and we have no thermostat.
Hope this makes sense, any help would be great!

As far as I can see, that thread is talking about leaving the heating on all day controlled by the thermostat. We don't have a thermostat. I am querying whether it is best (cheapest) to have the timer set for constantly 'on' for approx. 2 hours morning and night ... or... have the timer set so it goes 'on' for 15 minutes and then 'off' for 15 minutes and continues to do this alternately for a longer period of time?
Thanks for your help in advance!0 -
It would be cheaper to invest in thermal vests and leave the heating off/turned down low.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0

Nobody can answer your question as it depends on the charachteristics of your house - insulation etc and the usage.
You might not have a room(wall) thermostat but surely each radiator will have a TRV (Thermostatic Radiator Valve) without those your house will just get hotter and hotter.0 -
If you have no method of controlling the heating based on room temperature at all then the answer is simple. The cheapest method will be the one that has the heating on for the least amount of time. Of course, there will be significant differences in comfort levels - it's not always about being cheapest. If you're still sitting there freezing then the cheapest is the lowest value for money you may as well have not put the heating on at all.0
