Off-piste skiing/snowboarding insurance

As a snowboarder I tend to find myself spending much time in the ungroomed areas at the side of the pistes looking for fresh powder to enjoy. As a responsible adult buying myself travel insurance for the first time, I wonder if travel insurance companies will distinguish between the normal piste area and the ungroomed areas to the side? I know some companies provide separate cover for 'on' and 'off-piste' and most require a guide to be with you but I don't know how off-piste they expect you to be to need this cover. I'm probably not going to have a guide with me for these areas so that's the reason I ask.

Does anyone have any experience making claims to insurance companies after being injured skiing or snowboarding off piste?

check in the back of a skiing brouchure, there should be something in there about insurance and the definitions of off piste, but my understanding is that off piste is a no no, I know you mean the ungroomed areas to the sides but how far off the piste were you looking to go?

if you go way off piste and get injured who would know (if your alone) at least on piste there are others, medics in radio contact etc an all better setup if you did have an accident.

I went heli snowboarding (way off piste) and was told I would not be covered, they even gave us avalanche detectors, which didnt inspire confidence.
