Vikings in my central heating system!

For the past few days, around an hour after the central heating timer has turned off, we get a loud noise - it sounds like the vikings are coming (loud fog horn type noise).
I've had a search on here but the noises most people seem to hear are creaks & hums. Any idea what could be causing this or how we sort it? It's not done it before and we haven't made any recent changes to the system.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
