yes they are essential as most windows programs are built on the NET framework, the updates are pushed through microsoft update and are mainly security and performance upgrades.

I think it may depend what OS you use.

Removed Net framework off my older PC running XP a few years ago as it really slowed it down, only programme I have found so far that required NET framework is Microsofts Fixit also I don't have it installed on my netbook which I use most of the time and have had no problems.

tons of stuff use it, games, general utility apps like conversion tools, paint apps (paint.net for example), and loads more,

all versions of windows have a version of .net already installed so that is why you have can still run programs all the updates do is patch security and add more features.
just because you dont install the updates doesnt mean you dont use it or it isnt being used after all it is invisible to the user and is just a collection of languages that alow programs to work.

Erm.....not in Windows XP, might be different in Vista/Windows 7

I have removed all .NET components on XP unless Microsoft decided to hide them, not come across any problems running anything on XP.
