hi guys, this is a longish story so sorry. I work For the Range, and everyday we clock in and out. we also have to sign a firelog book to say we are in the building. well on saturday i completed a 10 hour shift. i clocked in for the start of the shift ,and clocked out for the end of the shift.i also signed the fire log book on the way in BUT i forgot to sign it on the way out. Well i was pulled in today and told the clock in machine was faulty so they took the firelog book as shift times, as i forgot to sign it on my way out they have told me im not being paid for the whole 10 hour day.so they have had a free days work off me. Its fifty odd quid. they have cctv and i talked to people the whole shift. can they really not pay me????? i also got a disciplinary...

I don't know if they can pay you or not, but do you realise how important it is that the firelog book is correct? Your Fire Marshall could have risked his or fire Brigade officers lives trying to find you in a burning building that you'd actually left 3 hours ago............
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

i do know this. i have worked for them for 4 months and sign it every time, on this occasion i was tired from a long shift and 2 babies up all night. i accept the disciplinary. not the pay

Using their logic surely they should've just kept paying you, coz you signed in only?!!!!

I don't think they can do this - double check with CAB or ACAS.

  • I would be kicking a fuss up at this, you were there you did work so you should be paid.

Out of order to dock your pay and then give you a disciplinary.
Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam
  • When they did your induction; did they tell you that they would both give you a disciplinary AND dock your pay?
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

Whilst I cannot disagree with anything anyone else has said, I think someone has to point out that you have only four months employment, and therefore can be dismissed with ease. It isn't fair, no - but is it worth loosing your job over a days wage? Because unfortunately that is what it may come down to. Loosing a days wage is grossly unfair - but loosing a job may be even worse, and only you can decide whether the stand is worth the risk.
  • If I were you, I'd think about who it is who has told you that you will lose a days pay. Was it a local manager or area manager, or someone higher or Human Resources-type? Has it been put in writing?

You may find that actually it doesn't happen.
Ssshh - I might know about deals in/near Keswick
  • well thanks for the help so far. in my contract it said i would get disciplined for failiure to sign the log book, but nothing about docking pay, their argument seems unfair as i clocked in and out. it isnt my fault the machine was faulty. i am just fed up with these " bigger " employers doing things like this. i found out this morning that my friend is also being docked 4 hours pay as he didnt clock out, he clocked in after dinner but finished and didnt clock out, its £50 of my money and i worked my !!! off to earn that.
