How To Use MetaTrader 4 on Mac

Options
Hi, this is a question for experienced traders that use Mac. I have a Macbook Pro (I'm new to Mac) but do not want to compromise the security on it in anyway so I'm still using my PC for trading (FOREX). How can I use the MT4 platform on my Mac without compromising the security (viruses, etc.)? I'm not a techie so I'd appreciate a simple breakdown of the step by step process if there is a way for me to do this.

I'm not familiar with the software, but I should be able to give you a rundown of using it with your Mac.

MT4 is a Windows only program from what I can see - it will not run on the Mac.

Options to run it on the Mac are as follows:
    1) Dual boot your Mac: it can start up using Windows or Mac OS. When booting in Windows, you can run Windows programs just like you're on your PC.
http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/ - it's simpler than the notes make it out to be.

    2) Use virtualisation: you run a version of Windows alongside the Mac. This requires a third party piece of software such as Fusion, Parallels or Crossover.

I would suggest the second option, as this makes it very easy to use both Windows and Mac environments whilst being able to use programs from both. It will cost you though. I recommend Fusion for this option. You can trial this option for free by following instructions at the MT4 forums - it uses a trial version of Crossover.

The first option is free if you already have a windows installation disk with license. However, to use programs on Windows from Mac, you will have to reboot into Windows and vice versa, which can be troublesome.

Decide which one you may wish to use and I will try to get back to your thread when I can to help you to give you easy to follow step by step instructions.

Whichever option you chose, you may wish to use it as a 'Sandbox', keeping all your work on the Mac environment and only using the Windows environment for MT4 and nothing else so you will have to think little of virii when working with MT4.

I hope I've helped to answer your question.
  • Scrilla, thank you very much for taking the time to give a detailed response - it's much appreciated. Your explanation has made things much clearer to me. I like your suggestion of the 2nd option so I will look into that over the weekend.

    Regards.
