British Gas price rise

Options
I received the letter yesterday informing me of the British Gas price increase starting in 34 days time, this is not enough time to switch suppliers, at the bottom of the letter it said to phone if you wish to terminate your contract and avoid these changes.
I do intend to move supplier, so I called them and was subjected to 20 minutes of arm bending £50 cash offers and informed there was nowhere to hide as all the other suppliers would follow their brave lead.
When she eventually ran out of steam, I asked her to just terminate my contract and was told there was nothing physically she could do and the new supplier would handle all that.
So why bother to ask me to call British Gas in the letter? also I remember from the last time I moved supplier the tariff was kept the same until the new supplier took over.

You can reject the price rise by leaving, but BG need to know this is why you are leaving.
The agent you spoke to should have registered this.
They were right though, that they can't terminate a contract - otherwise you could terminate it with BG and not go anywhere...
