Brother DCP-165 Printer won't print black ink :(

I have a Brother DCP-165 Printer which I have had for about a year. A couple of the colour inks came up as needing replacing (wouldn't let me print, message came up in small LCD window saying replace ink) so I ordered them from the Brother website and when they arrived, installed them.
When I printed out the test print page, no black ink showing at all, just all the colours - Cyan, Yellow and Magenta.
I had no problems at all with the black ink prior to installing new colour ink cartridges.
The cartridges are installed properly. I have 'cleaned' using the clean facility in the little menu on the machine (LCD panel and menu button) and no black ink at all.
Tried to print a letter in documents folder, no black ink, page comes out an empty page.
Printer is installed on an iMac.
Can anyone help? thank you if you can
