Has Yahoo been hijacked??

Hi all
Not been here for a while but hope one of you kind pc experts can help.

I have been helping a friend with his pc. He was having all kinds of problems and has reinstalled windows. However, he has never had any security set up and relied on Norton as an antivirus, which his son (or something else!) kept switching off. As a result, the pc has been very badly infected with spyware etc. I installed and ran Spybot, Ewido (now AVG), Ad-Aware and AVG antivirus. I dealt with (or so I thought) all the spyware and a couple of Trojans which they threw up. I played around with the pc for a while, did a bit of surfing and no pop-ups appeared and system was running faster.

However, I have just had a phone call from him saying when he went into his Yahoo mail, the popups appeared again and he got a message saying his password was invalid.

Not having any experience of Yahoo, I can only think that something has gotten into it and the spyware programs and antivirus haven't removed it.

Any ideas anybody? Any help would be appreciated, but I won't be able to go to his house again until the weekend so would like to go armed with a list of other things I can do..?

Thanks in advance

  • Thanks Zahc
I did read something on the previous link that didn't look too promising about this one so was undecided. I like to err on the side of caution especially as it's not my own pc I am dealing with - I want to be extra careful. Don't know where to go from here though. It also took each program over an hour to run today.

Also, am I right in assuming that it's spyware causing the Yahoo mail problem or could it be something else, like Yahoo playing up?
  • Hi,
I was here last night with the same problem and somehow got it sorted but now it has gone again.
I log in and it takes ages to load before saying invalid page
Someone last night suggested that something might have got in there (to yahoo) but if so I think I am done for. Not sure if this is what you friend has. I have been getting a lot more spam in the last week or so
Bit of a loss what to do now

  • Thanks for that info savingsforme.
I am going to suggests he runs all the spyware programs again and if it still happens maybe reinstalling Yahoo would help, but I doubt it.
Looks like a complete reinstall might be on the cards again, but I am desperately trying to avoid that.
Good luck with yours, maybe you could let me know if anything else happens?

A piece of spyware known as 'Cool Web Search' often has symptoms of pop-ups and changes to the home page. It is notoriously difficult to get rid of with the normal anti-spyware utilities you have described, however there is one utility called CWShredder, which will get it off your system.

    Hope this helps.

    two things to do:
    1. go to www.spywareinfo.com (best visited in IE) and click on the online scan link (the link here will take you straight to the online scanner).
    2. get and run hijack this on the machine, submit it to one of the forums for an expert to check it (i'm sure a few folk on here can do this for you).
Sometimes i surprise myself by being right.
