watch/download movies/TV online HELP!

It's a confusing jungle out there.
I live where TV signals are blocked by a massive cliff face behind the house so we've just hired Videos and DVDS for 15 years. I can't say I miss TV but would love to be able to watch Films or good documentaries and dramas etc on the PC sometimes.
Don't object to paying but want a good deal. We are so far from the line exchange that broadband is limited to 1MB max and that is erratic too.
I have spent weeks/months/ years trying to find the best answer.
Recently signed up for Channel 4s online progs but as it's only tiny and often out of sync and crashes frequently it is fairly useless.
I don't want the whole illegal download stuff as I prefer not to have my system open to spyware, viruses etc and would be happy to pay for something Kosher.
Can anyone give me some ideas?

Can't you just get sky, that would seem to answer your problems?
Ever stop to think and forget to start again?

AFAIK its not illegal to download tv series, documentries ect. pls correct me if I am wrong.

There are lots of secure methods ( most free)

Sky would be your best option but as you say getting a signal is a problem. Have you looked into getting sky?

  • Thanks but we can't have Sky. No dish allowed as my flat is part of a listed building in a historical conservation site. It's also written into my lease specifically.

Where could I go to find out about doing as you say and downloading series, documentaries? Could you give me some pointers as to secure software or services. As I said initially I've looked and found loads of things but have no way to know which is good.

It apparently is illegal to download the tv series - if you are talking about getting it from filesharing networks which have been captured off the tv (like recording to vhs). However some tv shows are available online on some of the tv channel websites. These are generally designed for a good broadband connection. Some programs also provide podcasts which are compressed quite well but it's usually entertainment programs like bbc breakfast.
  • Still getting nowhere. *sigh*
By the time I search, register. negotiate each site I've wasted hours and most of em turn out to be rubbish.
Either nothing on them except random garbage/ shopping channels or very pricey film downloads. One was asking for £10.00 to £16.00 for downloading each film! Nothing special either.
I guess noone else really has a need for this as everyones on Sky etc.

Do you have a open view to the south, if so you may be able to have a dish in the garden, say attached to a paving slab struture to have it classed as temporary. I've seem a few listed buildings do this
