I worked in small independent laboratory as a lab technician, but we didn't have a cleaner. We did the cleaning and four of us were on a rota doing two weeks of sweeping and washing the lab floors, a week of hoovering and dusting the office and rest room, and a week of cleaning the toilet. Everyone just got on with it.
Here I go again on my own....

Count yourself lucky it was in the bathroom. At my old job someone found a poop in the microwave

Hope it was fully cooked through before you ate it, could cause food poisoning otherwise.

    you'll need this soon
  • I suppose at the end of the day it depends on your contract. Most contracts I've had did say "any other duties" but remember these duties have to be "reasonable".

For example if I worked in a hospital canteen I would not consider it reasonable if they asked me to perform open heart surgery because a doctor was off sick.

As much as I think the OP is probably a total pen!s, I agree with the sentiments of what he is saying here. Clean the toilet and risk catching hepatitis? No thanks.

I doubt the employer was saying they have to do it with their bare hands

I don't doubt it. However, cleaning the toilet, however protected, leaves the cleaner at SOME risk (however slight) of catching something that would not occur had they not been tasked with cleaning it.
  • Not withstanding the comments from the other posters, which I feel is all very relevant, there is the possibility of a Health and Safety risk when cleaning toilets. Apart from the nastiness and germs aside there is a potential risk from Hepatitus when dealing with bodily fluid from others. I know our cleaning contractors must have an vaccine which must be updated every few years so that it stays current.

In addition, risk assessments should be carried out and appropriate control measures should also be implemented. With training of sorts offered so that you are aware of the potential hazards (correct use of ppe, hygeine and dermatitis risks if your using chemicals).

Not wanting to get on the elf and safety bandwagon here but its the law and its there for a reason. You have a lot more rights from an employment tribunal if you are being treat unfairly through a health and safety issue. Do you have a union at this workplace ? or a Health and Safety officer to discuss any shortcomings ?
