Dog health scare

Hi All

Just wanted to share this with you.

I was sitting here browsing the site, Dh at work, DD at school, so it's just me and the boys (a lab/collie cross age 12, and a dalmatian age 2)
The Dally is doing his usual job of acting as my footwarmer, and the lab is laying in his bed, snoring away. Then I looked over, and he (the lab) was violently jerking his head. JEEEZ, the old boy is having a seizure!!!!
I threw aside this laptop, grabbed the housephone - dialling the vets, and rushed to his bed and was stroking his head gently and spoke softly to him while the call was being connected. Then I listened, there was a muffled cackling noise coming from under the dog?!?! I lifted his head, and there he was, laying on one of DD's shaking "witch in a bag" toy! Seizure over!

Next time perhaps I ought to check him over a tad before calling the vet, as they answered the phone at this point - only to be met by the sound of my relieved giggles!

p.s. This IS money saving...save yourself the cost of a phonecall and/or trip to the vet and make sure the pet is really ill, and there are no environmental infuences:)

Ha ha! Glad he's ok though! I got a shock with Lucy once...thought she was having an epileptic fit or something. Her eyes were half open, her paws were thrashing about, her muzzle jerking up and down exposing her teeth and she was making little muffled barking sounds.

Several years and similar episodes later, I now know she was just having one of her rabbit chasing dreams!

And when Jack was a puppy he leaped up off my knee one afternoon yelping and raced round the room trying to get at himself underneath. I grabbed him to check him over and all his "boy bits" were rock hard - so I reckon that was his first naughty dream!!!

Took ages to go down, too.........hmmm...pity all males aren't like that!!!!!!!!!!

Phew, sleepystar, I was worried there that I wouldn't like how your post was going to turn out. I hope you explained it to the vet receptionist, it's the sort of story they would love.

Little dog has random syncopes (unexplained collapses/fainting periods, they aren't seizures) and the first few times it happened I was absolutely terrified. When I got him to the vets after the first attack, they were more concerned about me than little dog as I was white as a sheet and looked like I was going to collapse as well.

I did tell her, and heard her hooting with laughter too! The old dog is due his vaccines next month, but I am making Dh take him, I don't think I could face them so soon!

The old dog was quite indignant that my concern woke him up, and got out of his bed, snorting and sneezing and shooting me filthy looks over his shoulder.

Oh no! Poor little dog. Are they investigating any further? Give him a wee fuss from me and my boys.

Ha Ha! The indignant stare, I know that one - big dog has it down to a fine art, most often seen if I sneeze and disturb her slumber, bizarrely I always end up apologising to her. :o

As for little dog we (vet and I) think it's probably triggered by a heart arrythmia causing a block in flow of oxygen to brain (or at least the few brain cells he has). But he's 14, deaf, has absolutely no co-ordination in his legs - they seem to work independently of each other and his limited brain - yesterday on a walk, he managed to cross his front legs over each other while still powering forward with the back legs and ended up in a heap on the floor, but he shakes it off and bumbles onward completely unconcerned! It's also not unheard of for him to fall off the edge of the pavement!

The attacks aren't happening that often and the next stage would be for him to wear a holter ecg for a few weeks (basically ecg strapped to his body 24 hours a day) but he is an absolute drama queen about having things "done" to him, hates being groomed, if he sees the brush, he leaves the room; can't put a dog coat on him, he just collapses in a heap and refuses to move etc etc so strapping stuff to him will probably cause more stress than the syncopes do at present. So we're just monitoring it for now.
