Killed a cat this morning.

Country road, wife driving at around 50mph and it just ran straight across in front of the car. Long straight road with no other car on the horizon. In fact no other car went past for about ten minutes.

It was killed instantly with a head wound so I know it didn't suffer. I moved its body to the verge so it wouldn't get squashed.

The question is, what should we do know? We did try a nearby house, but there was nobody in. If it is still there by the side of the road on our way home should we take it home and bury it, or would it be better to leave it where it is and hope the owners find it?

We lost our cat just over a year ago, and this is just awful. :(

I didn't want to read and run.

You must feel awful. I would if that were me. I've had so many near misses with animals over 30 years of driving and only killed a rabbit ad a pigeon so far.

    You couldn't have avoided it.

I take it wasn't wearing a collar with ID

I suppose if there was no answer at the nearest house you could have left a note in the letter box.

There's not much you can do really.

Do we keep our pets indoors or let them have a bit of freedom and take the risk....?

Oh dear, thats terrible news. Poor you. I hit a dog once and it was truly awful!! I cried for hours and it was only slightly injured.

I would collect the cat and take it to a vets. They will check for a microchip. If there isnt one they can check their records to see if it matches a description they have on file and you might find the owners that way. If not, I would leave it at the vets to dispose of.

I did this recently when I found a dead cat. The owners later got in touch to say thank you. The only way that they knew their cat had been killed was when they contacted all the vets in the area and found the one I'd taken the cat to. Otherwise, they may be forever wondering about what had happened to their cat. I'd ask the vets to keep the body for a week or so before disposing of it, to give them chance to contact etc and claim the body if they want to bury it themselves.

I did wonder about the microchip. If it is still there I think I will pick it up and take it to see if it has a chip. There was no collar.

The trouble is we have to drive past there twice a day and I don't like the thought of seeing it for the next month or so.

On the other hand, if it was my cat I'd want to know what had happened to it, either way.

I'll try the house again this evening.

Thanks for the replies... well most of them.
  • I lost my cat on the 30th Nov 2009... we were devistated that no one ever found it!

I would hope that you would take it to the vets, because if it's not microchiped the owner will call at all the local vets and will find out bu the colour and markings on the cat... they need to know what happened to their cat.

Mine was microchipped... and after a year it still hurts not knowing what happened to him.

Maybe someone burried him out of kindness... but we will never know!

My cousin's cat was run over an killed last week and they only found out because the driver took the cat to the vet. It was microchipped and they were contacted. They were upset obviously but were glad the driver took the cat to the vet even though it was clearly dead.

I find it strange that you would fail to see why I might find it offensive but seeing as you asked...

Edited because the offending post has been removed.

I shall not reply any more to questioning from you on this subject.

Well, all things considered, there is a reasonably happy ending to this sad tale.

We went back to get the cat on the way home and it wasn't there. I called into the nearby house and the door was answered by some children (my heart sank). However, it seems the cat was one of the feral cats that lived in the barns opposite.

My wife is still upset at hitting it in the first place, but at least it was no-one's loved pet... and adouglasmhor didn't get to it first in order to satisfy his sick taste.

    Again, thanks for the replies.
