How to use a dehumidifier?

I am thinking of investing in a dehumidifier. Primarily because i am having to dry a lot of clothes inside, but also because our bathroom is covered in mould that keeps coming back really quickly.
My main question is how do you use one? Is it something you have to have turned on permanently or does it have a "cycle"? I'm sorry if this is a daft question, i've never seen one working before.
Also, while i'm here does anyone have any cheap and cheerful ideas on where to buy on from / recommendations.
Thanks!

Hiya
I have one and its fab
You just plug them in and they extract the moisture from the air... mine has a dial to set how dry i want the air to be... if i turn it low then it switches itself off in the same way as a thermostat I suppose. If I put it on high then it rarely turns off.
They have a water collection tank - the unit switches itself off when that is full - just empty it (i use it on plants) and its ready to go again.
Hope that helps0 -
Usually they're switched on and off as you require them. I've not heard of one that works automatically like a heater might with a thermostat. Don't forget that the water reservoir needs to be emptied regularly.
I think I've read on here that a couple of posters have bought theirs from Argos but I can't remember the name of the manufacturer, I'm afraid.
You can remove and kill the mould in the bathroom with a chlorine bleach solution but until you've removed the cause of the condensation it will keep coming back, as I'm sure you've realised.0 -
I bought one specifically for drying clothes in what used to be the airing cupboard, and love it. The one I got, from John Lewis, has a laundry setting, moves the vents around and has a timer switch. The water bucket does need emptying unless you have it connected up with a hose.

It was a bit cheaper when I bought it but I'm sure that other models are not so expensive. Best investment this year.0 -

Thanks for posting uropachild. I read your post with interest as I am having the same trouble of damp & mould in the bathroom.
I am also thinking of investing in a dehumidifier.
Have just had a look on Amazon & spotted the 'Delonghi DEM10', which is on offer down from £129.99 to £104.03.
This is a little more than I was expecting to pay but it seems like a good one (120 reviews - most of them positive). So I may take the plunge - it will be worth it in the long run if I can get rid of that damn mould! :T
Hope this helps.0 -

I've just bought a DEM12 so not dissimilar to the one you're looking at and I think it's great - especially for getting laundry dried. Well worth the cash imo.0 -

I had an ebac one from Argos, same one you can buy from Homebase, it is around the £150, but you could wait for a discount day etc.
I really miss it now, but sadly was in the last house i rented so couldnt take it with me, but it was amazing for extracting the water from clothes drying on the clothes horse as well as taking the excess moisture out of the air!!!! Will buy one again when i get the funds, defo worth the money!!!!Groceries challenge
May - £70 so far:beer::beer:0 -

Mine is an ebac, it's brilliant, it switches itself on and off and you will be AMAZED at the amount of water they take out of the atmosphere :-0Downshifted
