How to use a dehumidifier?

Plug it in, turn it on, empty when full
I must admit, it is the one household appliance I would NEVER be without. If my TV and Dehumid break, I would replace the Dehumid. As Downshifed said, you will not believe the amount of water it takes out, quite literally litres a day
This time of year, I tend to leave mine on all the time, and just move it around the house. It will make a huge difference. You will notice it after a day or two when you turn your heating on and you can feel it almost straight away, instead of heating up the moisture in the air first THEN the air itself
Mine has a laundry assist mode also. It pulls the air in, de-moistuers it, then heats it a little and blows it out. Just aim that at the clothes and they dry twice as fast
Running costs will differ from machine to machine, with the mode you have it on, motor power, refrigeration or conderder type etc. But it pays for itself after a while. You do not need your heating on as high or as longThere are 10 kinds of people that understand binary

Althas, what machine do you have?
MrsE, thanks for the Argos link. I was considering that one, or the one from amazon for £104. Does anyone know if the difference in ££ is worth it? I don't mind spending a little extra to get a better machine if it's worth it.
I'm thinking i might be really sad and ask for one for Christmas for DH and i from my parents...Sarah.

I have had a dehumidifier for years & its a god-send. I had an ebac about 15 years ago which even then cost £379, but it lasted years. The one I have now was around £100 from Comet I think.
They have a dial on them so you can set it to what level of moisture extraction you want. At this time of year I tend to keep mine on the "constant" setting. It really comes into its own if I'm doing alot of cooking, because of the steam created. Also, as other people have said, it certainly helps with drying the laundry.
You can get ones which have the option of attaching an outlet hose so the extracted water can be fed into a sink or maybe a shower tray (so it flows away down the plug hole). These can be handy if the house is empty for long periods of time.
I tend to check mine at bed time & empty it so its reservoir is ready for the whole night, and again when I get up.
The extracted water is excellent for use in my steam iron, as it contains no or little limescale. I even bottle it for my neighbour & my mum who both swear by it.
One other thing, my last house was quite old & dusty and I found it really helped to have a removeable air filter so that I could remove & vac it when necessary.
Hope this helps x0 -
This all helps tons, thank you!
I'm just weighing up whether to buy one now. Things are a bit tight money wise right now, but it does seem a worthwhile buy.Sarah.

We have the Delonghi DEM 10, and it's great. Purchased at Argos, price around the £100 mark.Official DFW Nerd No 096 - Proud to have dealt with my debt!0

I ordered the DeLonghi DEM10 from Amazon on Tuesday evening; we are in a rented flat and are finding it is a little damp and there is a horrendous amount of condensation on the windows. I'll let you know when it turns up and if we think it's any good!0

Hi,
We wouldn't be without ours either.
We use it during the winter in the spare room for condensation (puddles on the windowsill  ) Dispite the heating being on all evening 4.00pm to 10.30pm, and the biggest radiator in the ruddy house
Ours cost around £60.00 from Currys a few years ago now, its a Matsui, no idea wether thats a good make or not, but it works.
I would deffently replace it pretty quickly if it went caput.
We switch ours on at night, you just turn the dial until it comes on, then it just hums away to itself. (We sleep in the room next to it) We just point it at the window.
Can't prase them enough :T
I've no idea how much they cost to run, but ours is on nearly every night from around mid Oct to Mar and we havn't noticed any great increase in the bills.0 -
Right, i just ordered the dem10 after consulting with my husband.
Is it weird that i'm excited?????Sarah.

Nopewhen we got ours, we kept on checking in the room and looking at it.
Its a wonder we didn't give it a name!!!0 -
I got the http://www.dry-it-out.com/DD822-Graphite-dehumidifier
But the MkII version (not available any more and was £50 less than this)
As we live in a 1 story flat, there is no where for a tumble drier, so that is why I paid the extra for the laundry drying mode. Also the ultra quiet running mode, so I can leave it on in the bedroom overnight also and it does not disturb sleep
That website I bought mine off had a great range, so if you do not find what you are looking for in Argos, may be worth a look
uropachild it is not wierd at all. just wait until the first time it turns itself off full, you will not shut up about it ;-) "BLOODY HECK that was only 4 hours to full, wow...) heheThere are 10 kinds of people that understand binary
