Can I switch if I owe them money?

  • Bit of a grey area this, they have to read the meter once every two years I believe and I'm not sure if the meter reader would have ladders. Probably not.

My meter is about eight feet high I reckon, you can read it during the daytime but night time you'd need to get up there on a chair with a torch. I just rent though so if it needed moving its not my problem.

I don't believe it is the owners responsibility, as it can be very expensive to move a meter, and its not exactly thier fault if the bloke doesn't have a ladder is it?

prosaver is right ... you are on dodgy ground supplying him with a ladder. Which idiot installed a meter in such a daft location?

Only if the ladder was on dodgy ground :D

Oh great.. now you want me to pay hundreds to get the thing moved. I'm glad you're not making the rules.

Personally I think the idiot that put it there in the first place should pay to have it moved to a more normally accessible location!

I would imagine it's up to the householder to ensure the meter is in a position that they can read it without any special equipment.

    Why would you imagine that?

The meter is sited / fitted by the supplier not the householder and may well have been fited under another occupier anyway.

Whilst they could get away with estimates for a couple of years it's also ultimately the suppliers legal responsibility to read it & accurately bill the account, not the householders

Well bully for you. You have no idea at all what the circumstances are for other people. Even the meter reader can't read my electric meter because he doesn't bring a ladder. I have to get ours for him and carry it down the three flights of narrow, bendy stairs and back up again. Takes more than a minute for little ol' me. Haha.. when the guy came to change the meter he said rather loudly "Jesus Christ" as he balanced precariously on the top of his step ladder. Just don't presume everyone is nimble and agile as you!

I have a similar problem, I have a high celling and my meters are fitted almost at the very top, if the electric trips Im !!!!!!ed unless my partner is here as he can just about reach if he stands on a chair. Stupid high meters eh?

EDIT: Wow that word really wasnt that rude.... surprised it filtered that! haha

Fair enough. Screw 'em then. I certainly wouldn't offer help in the way of lending a ladder though. That's just asking for trouble.
