Help - we have an invisable leak!

I work from home and for the last month or so I can hear the water tank filling up and water meter 'ticking' for about 4 seconds every 40 minutes. I have not been using any water!

No leaks are showing (no water marks on ceiling etc)

Any ideas how I can find this leak. Do you think its a water pipe or central heating system/ hot water tank etc etc.

Any help appreciated!

Do you know if the water tank making the noise is your cold water storage tank, or a header tank for your heating (if you have one). Deciding that will be a good start.

Check any outside overflow pipes for signs of drips/trickles

Check toilets to see if cistern are overflowing ...(most now have an internal overflow that goes into the bowl).

Might just be the ball valve in your cold water cistern needs adjusting because it takes ages to switch itself off completely.

Definitely check the overflow, have had issues with that in this house and our last! Also as previous poster said toilet cisterns! They seem to now be famed for the push button getting slightly stuck down and the toilet will then keep refilling until it releases the button!
