What do you think you would `pick up` from having glasses from a CS? Many of us take and buy bargains from a charity shop - the staff do scrutinize the donations when they arrive. Clothes are steamed etc.

I am really confused as to why you would buy second hand glasses if you were aware of your OCD tendencies.

    .

Totally agree! hot soapy water is fine. Rinse in vinegar solution if the glass is a bit dull /cloudy.... will make it sparkle.

OCD? Can you get your hands on a bit of Milton Sterilising solution (friend with baby, maybe?) If it's good enough for a new-born baby's bottle/dummy would that set your mind at rest?
  • Thanks guys for the helpful suggestions

They are just for ornamental purposes on my vanity, not for drinking from!

I am trying hard to "get over" certain things and trying to give things a go! Very much wether an item is new or used I will be concearned about bringing it into the house regardless!

I have no doubt they are absolutely fine! its just one of those things that always niggles me

    Thanks for reassuring me :)

  • If you have a genuine OCD no advice will reassure you until you are sure they are clean (you should know instinctively if you are happy). Are you asking for advice on what would you consider clean as you lack self conidence and you are aware that your parameters of cleanliness are skewed and are trying to reinstate correct thinking patterns? OCD isn't really about cleanliness, but about anxiety that probably has nothing to do with the item it is manifesting in.
  • I am just asking how a reasonable person would santise items from a charity shop - as clearly my idea of how clean something is isnt "normal".

I know that if the glasses do become triggers for me ultimately they will have to be removed from the house and regifted- no amount of bleach will change that!! I know its not as simple as that, however for me my OCD anxiety centers around the kitchen & bathroom which is displayed by way of cleaning rituals and checking of locks.

Would like to be able to bring some old things into my home and not have an issue with them, its all a learning curve! I am going to weekly CBT and my councillor is encouraging me to try things which may have made me very uncomfortable say a year ago. Just being able to go in and buy them and have them in the house now is a big deal for me :)

Maybe my wording came out all wrong! Eitherway you guys have been ace as always, thank you for all the help :)

Congratulations on working on your OCD. It must be very difficult coz I know until yoou try it you wont know. If you cant have them out to start with could you wash them as you choose and then rewrap them so they are still there but less visible until you are ready to display them.

That is exactly what I asked you are resetting your parameters around what is clean by asking others what they consider clean, in an effort to alter your beliefs. Assuming that the councillor is helping you to address your anxiety that the rituals help you to deal with.

I have OCD and I can see how your feel, although luckily mine doesn't manifest itself in cleaning. Mine is mostly to do with numbers and rituals. I have to check that the front door is locked, then the back door and then the front door as well and only then can I go to bed. If something stops me from doing that, I can't rest until it's done.

I think it's great that you're getting help and I wish you all the best.
  • Thanks guys :)

I am having CBT yes, this is particularly stressful time of year meaning I am checking things a lot more and know I will be more easily triggered off!

They are in the house in a bag, I will clean them tonight and put them out for a bit :)

Thanks so much!(sorry if it got a bit OT!)

This reasonable person would give those glasses a rinse under some hot water if they were for decorative purposes only and then give them a buff with a clean tea-towel. For actually drinking out of I would use hot, soapy water. Highly alkaline, soapy solutions will kill most germs and a clean, dry surface won't allow them to proliferate either.
