Washing Machine Broken!!

Hi,

Just looking for a bit of advice here please.

My wifes just been on the phone to tell me our washing machine has broken down. She said she heard a crunching noise then a bit of a smell came from it.

The machine is around 18 month old and as far as I know, (dont have docs to hand), the warranty was for one year. I've not got any extra cover on the machine unfortunatley.

Would anyone know if I have any way getting the machine either fixed or replaced even though the warranty has expired? 18 months seems an awful short amount of time for a washing machine to break down given it is a modern machine.

I'll be taking a look over the documentation later on to see what I can see and I'll give Hotpoint a call but was hoping that someone may have some advice before I go making a call later.

Thanks in advance!!

**Edit**

My wife has just been on the Hotpooint website and it says that if the machine is out of warranty they will fix it at a fixed price of £80 which I guess is not the end of the world!!

I'll still take a look at my doc's when I am home and would welcome any comment on this.

Thanks

  • Might be worth searching the model name and number on a repair forum to see if similar issues come up (If its a Hotpoint I am sure they will I'm afraid!)

This site is pretty good on the forum for help as many engineers on there

I would get the £80 fixed price repair done (parts should be covered for 5 years with Hotpoint I believe) and then save save for a new decent machine with a proper warranty (5 years parts and labour ideally)

Worth having the back off and having a nose. If its something simple like the motor brushes having worn down, they can be ordered off the internet for a couple of quid and then put back in. If they'd worn enough to drop out they might have caused a crunch and a smell from a momentary short circuit (although I'd expect the electrics in the house to trip if that was the case). Other suspects might be the motor or the bearings - does the drum rotate easily without a grinding noise - if it won't then one of the above might be a problem. If its stopped mid cycle you may have to manually drain it - there's usually a drain point under a flap somewhere that will let you decant the water out.

You have done well to get a Hotpoint that lasted that long.;)
