Getting desperate and overwhelmed. I want to buy my grandaughter aged 17 a laptop for Christmas and I havent a clue as to what to buy. My grandaughter goes on facebook, browses the internet and wants to play games and watch films, be nice if she could also burn I think it is called dvds. I have a lot of Tesco vouchers but would top up with cash for the right laptop, it needs to be fast and have a good memory I think. Price range from 400 to 600 pounds. Seen Acer, Hp, Sony and sasmung, also Toshiba but cant tell one from the other, want sound and a cam, think that is all, well all I can think of. Can some kind person help me out and point me in the right direction please, be very grateful. Hope I have posted in the right place havent done this before. Thank you.

            Personally I'd pick this:
 http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.208-8799.aspx
 Important specs:
It's the cheapest laptop they sell with 4GB of memory, great make and a decent CPU that's not cutting edge but good enough for the intended purpose.£399.00
Audio Features: Yes with analogue output
 Built-in Webcam: Yes
 Hard Drive Capacity: 500GB
 Memory Size: 4GB
Operating System: Microsoft Windows® 7 Home Premium 32 bit
Optical Drive Type: DVD dual layer rewriter
 Processor: Intel® Pentium® Dual-Core
 Processor Model Number: T4500
If you wanted a better CPU then I'd go for this:
 http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.210-7384.aspx£499.00
Audio Features: Yes with analogue & digital output
 Built-in Webcam: Yes
Hard Drive Size in Gb: 500GB
 Memory Size in Gb: 4GB
Operating System: Microsoft Windows® 7 Home Premium 64 bit
Optical Drive Type: DVD dual layer rewriter
 Processor: Intel® Core™ i3

Dell are also a great make.0

David - maybe you didn't notice that the Lenovo laptop came with 32-bit Windows, so only about 3 GB of the 4 GB of memory would be usable? (Not that this detail should put off the OP!)Deleted_User wrote: »It's the cheapest laptop they sell with 4GB of memory...0

Bit irrelevant. I'd guess 1gb of that memory will be reserved by the graphics card for the aero affects, leaving 3gb which is well within limits of 32bit on 7.
Can never imagine a need for more than 4gb on a £400 laptop intended for home use.0

op you have stated she wants to play games - do you know which games she wants to play? is it something like the sim's or is it more facebook games? as this will change some of the suggestions aboveDrop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
 10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
 20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0

Sorry, havent a clue, what are sims?0

Yes - but it is the virtual address space which is used, not the real memory! So 3 GB of real memory (give or take) will give identical results to 4 GB of memory for a 32-bit operating system...Bit irrelevant. It's an academic point, since the laptop comes with 4 GB anyway, but the whole amount could only be used by a 64-bit operating system.0

Agreed. For the OP, either of the laptops I've suggested would be great presents and more than adequate for the granddaughter's needs.Yes - but it is the virtual address space which is used, not the real memory! Maybe the pink 1545
You're referring to this laptop and as you can see it has 3GB of memory compared to the 4GB installed in the Lenovo, for the same amount of money... I know which one I'd go for!0
