Excited, pup coming home...any things I should remember/expect for the first few days?

Beagle pup was due to come home at the weekend but due to transport issues is now coming home Thursday morning :-D A little overdue due to urgent household repairs needing to be done,so he'll be nearly 10 weeks!

So excited,as is my son,and after buying everything, making sure all leads etc are out of the way and being in happy 'my puppy is coming home' mode I'm trying to think if there's anything I may have forgotten and may need bringing back down to earth with what to expect in the first few days lol (I know that may sound bad,but with waiting for him since before he was born, meeting him regularly and my son going on and on all the time,I've spent the past few days thinking about the cuteness mainly lol)

It's a bit like a baby being due isn't it lol All the buying, the excitement and the cuteness, planning etc then when it's almost time you start thinking if you have missed something, forgot something and if everything is right!

I'm sure you have probably got most things! :)

The first things that come to mind are puppy kongs or puppy nylabones so they learn straight away what they are meant to chew! ;)

Are you using a crate if not well worth considering I would have been lost without it. My "pup!" is nearly 2 and still goes to bed in it every night and is always there flat out in the morning even though the door is wide open!

    Enjoy! :D

PS. Main thing you need is eyes in the back of your head!! :rotfl:

agree you need a crate best thing you can ever buy.
lucy my 6 year old had one and only gave it up in may this year
she used to have it in a spare bedroom and ask to go to bed
now we have bob he is 14 weeks , he uses it in the kitchen and lucy
still goes in for some quiet time.
Eyes in the back of your head, cctv camera tagging ! you will need them all. bob started to get in to tv cabinet and sit on top of sky box, so block whatever you can.
I would suggest going round the house on hands and knees to see what fun you could get up to and block off the areas.
treats by back door for training - its now working with bob
local council for chipping it cost £5 for bob vet charges a lot more
a mop and bucket , flash spray , lots of old towels for cleaning feet after being outside. flat shoes for walking, ipod, could go on but good luck you will need it. i was getting to the point were i needed match sticks to keep my eyes open but you will have years of love ahead

Ddon't bother with puppy pads - total waste of money! I bought some before getting Oakley - they are still in the packet as with using the crate he was clean within a day or so!

I'm glad you said that as I was wondering on the point of them if using a crate aswell as regular trips to the garden! My mother used to paper train all the pups but even the adults she used to leave paper down at night which i though was a bit daft

Nah, just get him house trained as quick as you can, and leave his cage open and in a place with an easily washable floor just in case there are any accidents in the night, it's what mum's done with all the dogs (except crating, we never did that as they all came upstairs and snored on the landing - or outside bedroom doors - not fun to trip over a dog at 2am lol)
Get him/her used to a collar and lead, even if you can't take him out you can acclimatise in the garden getting him used to being on it. Don't forget to get it spayed/neutered - you can be careful as hell but accidents can happen! (unless he's for breeding?)

You have to "think toddler" and move absolutely anything within the pup's reach that's dangerous and/or chewable.

My Jack ate a lily flower and threw up for England, then had a ballpoint pen for dessert on the first night. My cream carpets were wrecked! He chewed my vertical blinds, munched the computer wire, ribboned my stair carpet and shredded my shoe. He snacked on a five pound note and sampled a quick bite of Lucy's tail to finish off.

At the end of that first night he was exhausted after all his adventures....and so was I!!!

But they are worth it all.

Good luck with the little darling!
  • Be prepared for the crying my latest pup cried throughout all the first night and most of the second night, but gradually settled down, although she's nearly 4 month now and still cries in a morning at a time she deems fit to wake normally between 6 and 7  but once up she promptly falls asleep on the sofa for another couple of hours
  • Regarding the crying that Tracey mentioned - maybe warn the neighbours that you have a new pup coming?

Oh, I'm so green with envy! You're so lucky! :D
  • hi, few bits not covered so far. crates are great idea, dont mop up any puddles with bleach based product or most cleaners as they do not fully remove the scent and in some cases increse what the dog smells, so they re visit the area to urinate. Bio washing liquid quite good, allow it to soak in. or pet special products from vets or good pet shops, probably the net too. Dap diffusers or spray to settle them in are very good. They release pheramone that the !!!!! naturally releases to soothe and comfort/ bond the pups. buy from vets or internet. can really help. really try not to go to your pup if they cry a lot at night, or like a child, they will learn to train you, and what to do to get attention. ensure that you have good nutrition, if you dont plan to feed what the breeder is feeding, make sure you change over gradually as changes in diet can cause upset. Check worming and vaccination status and most vets offer free puppy checks for general questions on healthcare and feeding. hope that helps, best of luck and enjoy x

ps did you say beagle? they are great strayers, so good bonding and puppy/ ongoing training very important!!!!
