Hiring a carpet cleaner - what do i need to consider please?

Bought a old property and doing up will be a long and expensive process!! Carpets are ok (very old fashioned) and will have to be replaced over time. Thought if could spruce up would feel nicer! Looking through forums and can't find a thread to help so thought i'd ask - where should i hire from?
Local coop have rug dr but £24.99 plus £20 for cleaning solution, plus doesn't seem to have upholstrey option (thought clean my settee and disgusting car seats at same time)
HSS Hire seem to be ok, about £27.99 plus solution.
Homebase - had one for £18 weekend
but which will do the best job for the cheapest amount???

Please help..........:o

Have just hired acarpet cleaner from local Morrrisons. It was £19.99 for two days, we had shampoo so didn't need any. It also has the option to use on upholstery. Can recommend as it brought up our carpets very well, can't say about upholstery as didn't use that feature.

Thanks Tony. Did you get two days from a set time? Did you have to book in advance? Did it take long to do each room? Did it dry ok?

We bought a second hand (less than a year old and still under warranty) Bissel cleaner from Ebay for £80. It does a very good job, and with small children around, has already paid for itself when compared with hire machines. And of course, could be sold on if we felt that way inclined.
ETA - we do the carpets in the morning, then go out for a few hours. They are dry enough to walk on in socks in 24 hours

Incidentally, I did some side by side testing with Rug Doctor and Bissel carpet shampoos, and found that a squirt of Stardrops in warm water outperformed both quite significantly, but don't overdo it, especially in soft water areas, as it gets very foamy in a carpet cleaner if you put too much in.
  • We hire a rug doctor once/twice a year from B&Q. Hire it for two days and share the cost with the neighbour down the road. We have it one day and neighbour helps move furniture and they hav eit the next day OH helps moves furniture.

Works out much cheaper to split the 2 day cost and in 1 busy day we can clean all our 4bed house.

Didn't book in advance, just got it there and then. Need proof of identity though and a recent utility bill. Very easy to use and didn't take long at all, just like hoovering. It dried really well and made the carpets look like new again.

Thats sounds like a good idea, think I'll ask my mum and MIL if they want to borrow whilst i have it. :)

Does the b and q one do sofas as well? How much is it please?
