belkin router & NTL USB modem

im having real trouble setting up wireless access, and tbh dont know where im going wrong (all the blurb with the router said it was more or less idiot proof, ha)

currently my modem connects to my pc via a usb connection. according to the manual i need to connect the modem to the router via ethernet, and then connect my pc to the router, again via ethernet

when i connect the router to the modem via ethernet, the router shows it is connected to the internet, but i cant get online on the pc (the pc says no wireless hardware is detected?). even if i hard wire from the modem to the pc via ethernet i cant get a a connection, it only works via usb

also my laptop isnt picking up any wireless networks (would be surprised it at least one neighbour wasnt wireless). have never had wireless connection here, but use it regularly when visiting family, with no problems

any ideas where to go from here?

  • I'm sorry but I find your description of your network configuration rather confusing to say the least (although I appreciate it isn't easy to describe)

Wall socket (via filter) should have an ethernet cable from / to Router.

Router should have power supply (Obviously turned ON).

No need for "USB Broadband Modem" (defeats the object of the exercise)

Make sure you have "broadband Filters" on every phone socket in the house.

You will need to login to the Router (via the URL window of your web browser) in order to set up connection to ISP - (Default IP Address, Username and Password underneath the Router)

Once that little lot is done - if you cannot connect wirelessly try connecting the PC directly to the router with a straight ethernet cable.

    Hope this helps,

If the op has VM/NTL cable as their internet connection what he will need to do is.

Turn off the modem, and unplug it from the PC.
Turn off the router if not already off.

Connect modem to Router's "WAN" port.
Connect PC to Routers "LAN" port

Turn modem on, wait about 2 minutes, turn Router on.
That gets the modem online and working with and talking to the router.

Then turn the PC on, that gets the PC talking to the router (and thus the modem).
Then use his browser to log into the routers settings and set up his wireless network.

Once the wireless settings are done on the router, and duplicated on the PC, disconnect the Ethernet port.

The PC should then be able to connect wirelessly to the router, and access the net (assuming the PC has wireless hardware).

The key thing with VM/NTL modems is to turn them off fully whenever you change the device connected to them, especially if you are changing from the USB connection to the ethernet one, as the modems are set up to only ever talk to one device directly, and remember what that device was for a while.

are you with virgin btw? The ntl modem which had USB and Ethernet ports is a little out of date now, they should be able to replace it with a more up to date model.

Microsoft have also published a nice, straightforward guide (complete with illustrations).

OP,What model of router is it?
    If it's a cable modem,is it a '200' or the blue '250'?
IIRC,we did have a lot of trouble with these modems setting them up for wireless as when they were first used, wireless wasn't very popular due to the cost of laptops ect.Even the NTL supplied Actiontec pos wireless hubs gave us a lot of trouble.

thanks for all the suggestions so far

Nilrem, i dont have wireless on the pc, so would prefer to have this hard wired. had tried all the turning off, waiting and then turning on again, with no success

Exup and spike thanks, think i will contact VM, as my modem must be about 8yrs old. the model is a 120, so im assuming that way proceeds the 200 or 250 lol. the router is a belkin share N300

dispossed, thanks too, will have a study of those later, and see if my brain gets it. the flow charts make more sense than most things i have looked at

Yup..120's were the first ones we used.I'm not sure what the newest ones are as I've not worked for VM for a while but the blue 250 was the newest when I left.
