I've wondered about this, how about inviting 6 sales men round at the same time, put them in a room get them to measure up and make a sealed best price quote on the spot.

Or you could nip down to Jewsons and order from http://www.jeld-wen.co.uk/ then get any builder to fit, you would need to submit for a building control notice as they would not be FENSA certified.

Get a decent builder in. They will give you a one off price without all the bull that you get off window salesman.
Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.

    Thanks.
I hate dealing with salesmen, they are so much of a hassle.

deal with a local independent DG shop. i use a local one and never have any problems.
they give me their best price. take it or leave it. no sales bull sh it. no discounts etc.. no free holidays.
they have done three jobs for me.

    they do supply only too.
    Get some gorm.
  • It costs £75 for my local Building control office (Birmingham) to come out and check and issue the necessary certificate. They will check as many windows as necessary in one property. So however you have them fitted, the costs to get them certified are fairly low.

I had a window salesperson call at my door from safestyle windows, a company I wouldn't let touch my home after seeing the report on Watchdog. I told him that if I wanted any windows then I would fit them myself and he said smugly that I couldn't do it due to building control regs. I told him I could and then have building controls come out and certify them which removed the grin from his face and he went off to bother someone else.

I wouldn't let a window company work on my home. The previous owners had double glazing fitted and they fitted one window all crooked and two were poorly fitted. So no windows salespeople should call at my door because I won't be very friendly.

    Hello again

When it comes to me replacing my windows, I will deal with a local independent DG shop that way, I avoid the salesmen.

    Thanks all
  • We called out 3 local independants. One sent a salesman, the other two were the actual owner who fits the windows himself (with helpers).

In the end we went with the one who was recommended most. They were the most expensive but only by £200 but we got them to come down close to the lowest price. We told them all we were getting 3 quotes, so they fully knew we needed to see their best price.

Incidentally, the salesman one was suggesting we keep some of the old wood, sills etc, whereas the other 2 said that was not possible as the paint would crack/tear and become a mess where they ripped out the old windows. The old windows were Everest from 1981 and we were told that they are notoriously well glued in, and often cause internal and external damage, eg roughcast etc. We were lucky, only one (patio door) which is a bit of a mess round about, where it was previously a window as you could see where the sill once was as the plaster came away there.
  • Hi bundance try the energysaving trust, they have a list of local fensa certified suppliers.

If a company can afford to use salesmen, you can bet that they will be charging you for their time and other overheads. Far better to go to a small local company. Chances are you will be dealing with the boss/ owner himself/herself.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

Everest, Anglian, just 2 of the biggest in the UK, use salesmen, just about every product in the world is sold to you.
Small companies are fine, but a one man band is still selling you his wares. Most of the bigger outlets use self employed commission only staff, therefore the overheads, commissions, marketing, insurance, vehicles, office staff, all need paying for.
Most sales staff get nothing if they do not sell. No holiday pay, no company car, no sick pay, no retainer, NOWT.
Warranty issues....... aftercare.......correct fitting. Small is great, and cheaper. Big is expensive and both can go broke in a minute.
A national conservatory company I know spends 2.3 million pounds a year on advertising...... who else is gonna pay for that?:A
