Baxi Bermuda...noisy boiler.

Hi I wonder if anyone can advise please? We've recently moved house and have a baxi bermuda heating system, (gas fire with back boiler and radiators.) It seems to work ok but when it first switches on it makes horrendous banging and knocking noises. It's an old system and we intend changing to a combi boiler system as soon as we get the priority jobs done, (Which really means that we'd like to get this winter out of it if possible!) Is there anything we can do about it or should we just put up with it until we change? (Feeling sorry for the neighbours, I've set the timer so that it doesn't switch on too early!) Husband says that it's just air in the system but wondered if there's anything we can do about it? Thanks for any advice.

Good evening: have the BBU serviced and the rest of the CH system checked out by a RGI.

Thanks. We had BG out to see if we could continue their maintenance contract and pointed out a small leak in a joint under the floorboards near the boiler. They'd already checked the fire. The engineer said that it would mean draining the system which would cost about £180 before they would accept us. He advised that it would make more sense to renew the system as it's old and before we put carpets down etc.

we had a baxi bermuda back boiler that was regularly serviced/maintained and clanged and banged like billyo when it first switched on. It never failed in 15years. However, we replaced it earlier this year and our gas bills have dramatically reduced.

We`ve got one that we inherited with the house and have no intention of changing it :D

These things can last for years - the older stuff can be much more reliable than the new. Bleed the rads and the air should work its way out, if not the first time maybe the second. The leaky pipe you will have to deal with though.

    Good luck

He would, he gets a commission just for saying it!!

Like CH said - get it serviced. Use a local independent and forget the BG (or anyone elses) cover. Self insure against the future.

    Cheers

Thanks for all of your advice, it's helped to settle my mind. OH installed ch at old house, we got it connected and signed off by a certified installer of course but I just wanted to ask the experts!:T

I used to have a similar problem with a Worcester Bosch Combi boiler. It was caused by air in the system and made such a noise I was expecting it to jump of the wall!
There was a bleed valve on the top of the boiler casing which also happened to be the highest point in the whole central heating system, bleeding the air off through there then presurising the system fixed the problem.
