Celing cracks

Hi we have several large cracks (about 4mm wide) in our downstairs celing. It is just a cosmetic, not a structural problem, but can recommend a good filler? I have tried polyfilla and decorators caulk, but the cracks coming back!

Thanks

  • If these are straight cracks following the edges of the plasterboards, then it is difficult to stop any filler re-cracking.

If you can't gouge out the crack and insert some mesh scrim tape across the boards and then fill and sand down flush, then papering the ceiling or re-scimming it is the only option

As above and this also applies to cracks in L&P ceilings too. You need to rake the cracks out (make them bigger) in the case of the latter to give your filler something to grab hold of. Little tiddly bits will always just fall out. Try Easifill instead of parrot food.

    Cheers

4mm is quite large for cracks and shows that some movement is taking place somewhere. I have some small hairline cracks in many rooms as many rooms have no wallpaper on the ceiling so they are visible. Many of my rooms have horrible artex on which has to go, I h8 that stuff with a passion.

Sounds like you would need a permanently flexible filler which can accommodate fairly significant stretching. Some acrylic flexible filler might be suitable or permanently flexible decorators caulk.
