Hi i've gone for new quotes for my household insurance and spoke to an advisor - now there's the error of my ways. I own my own home, which I share with my two - now adult sons but I spend part of the year in a holiday home owned by my partner. I was told that I need land lord insurance for my home because my sons live in it when I'm not there. Is that right?

sounds like nonsense to me, suggest you find another advisor0

I'm not an insurance expert - but your son's are not tenants or lodgers, they are family. As far as I know, ordinary household insurance covers family members who live in the house. The fact that you spend time away from the property doesn't change the fact that it is your principle private residence. So it sounds like mistaken advice to me.
As I say, I'm not an insurance adviser, so do go to a broker and get independent advice.I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -
Different companies may have different criteria but many allow occupancy by immediate family members without needing landlords insurance.
I'm assuming you don't have any sort of tenancy agreement with your sons and are not renting the property to them as such. Although hopefully they contribute to household expenses!
If this is your main property and you are a permanent resident - ie the holiday home belongs to your partner and is used as such, for holidays - you should be able to insure the property normally.
If however you do not reside at the property at all you would need to consider other options.0 -
Please tell us who your adviser works for...I'm guessing a bank0

Do I detect touch of cynicism there?0
