hello

not sure if this is the right place to post this.

my son save for a laptop which we got him just after xmas last year and its work fine , at the weekend one of the buttons on the key pad has come off, and i cant fix it.
i emailed currys to find out how i got it fixed under the guarantee ,as i brought it online and i got this response;

Thank you for your email dated 15th November 2010.

In order for us to exchange the machine, it would need to be reported faulty to us within 28 days of purchase and for a qualified engineer to verify the fault. After this 28 day period we offer a free of charge repair. However, the manufacturer 12 month warranty only covers for technical faults.

Please feel free to call The TechGuys on 0844 800 6020 for further technical support with your goods. Thank you for taking the time to contact us. I trust that these actions will bring a satisfactory conclusion to this matter

can they do this I thought under guarantee they had to fix things or am i wrong

thanks for your responses in advance , any advice gratfully received

    See if you can find a reliable local firm, may cost you but they may be able to fix it for you with minimum hassle.
    That gum you like is coming back in style.

    So does it come under "fit for purpose" or "satisfactory quality" sales of goods act.

  • The standard warranty for a laprop is 1 year and it is possible that a repair like this is covered.

    A lot of "customer service" 9I use the term loosly !) is outsourced abroad - hence the reply which does not really appear to address your question. I am sure some of these centres use a tool like "Babelfish" combined with "cut & paste" to answer e-mails.

    However repairing a key is usually a matter of just applying firm, gentle but continous pressure to re-seat it so it might be worth having another try yourself.

    As for Currys - mention Trading Standards, the BBC's watchdog programme and the word "Solicitor" all in the same sentence. That should grab their attention if all else fails.

    If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
