I'd second the use of a house-line, a real easy, non-confrontational, way of removing the dog from the situation.
Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree! :D

Sounds to me as if he is trying to exercise his authority because he is at the puberty stage and his hormones are helping! Take him to the vet as others suggest to investigate neutering and ensure that at home and elsewhere he knows his place in the pecking order (which is way down)!

If you allow him to sleep on your bed or get on the furniture then I would suggest that you stop that right away.

A snapping dog is being aggressive (different to puppy play) and you just cannot afford to have this happen when there are children about.

Investigate dog training classes in your area and get him there quickly where they can help you deal with this. Better a few months where he is learning his manners than having to have him PTS because he bites someone.

I would think he is seeing the other people / dogs as a threat of some form and thus resource guarding. Some ideas here may provide basic help but I would suggest you seek the assistance of a good trainer.
