Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)
If you get a message that you cant write to the hosts file then Press the SHIFT key, and whilst holding it RIGHT CLICK and select RUN AS (admin)0 -
thanks guys, I couldn't find this post for a bit (it's on page 9 now or something)
I opened Task Manager but nothing is glaringly obvious. It was making its happy chewing noises on start up (it's left on standby) and took a full 4 mins to open Google Chrome home page. I am going to try to remove AVG to see if that is doing it. Also will remove any old software that OH used to use and now doesn't. And try Glary, not heard of that one before.
However after about 20 mins, it is now speeding up a little bit to more normal usage.
Question: I installed MSE as the only anti virus/malware on the little used netbook. Would that be all right for the Dell or do we really need Avast? Laptop is now named Dellhell2. Dellhell1 snuffed it while being "fixed" by a Dell technician & I lost all my data as thought that couldn't happen! (mind you, Dellhell2 was a free replacement)0 -
FORMAT C:
then just start again
**** only do this if you dont mind getting involved with computers and have everything backed up. A fresh install will always make a machine nice and fast then you can put back on exactly what you want and be assured that any rubbish has gone0 -

Only do this after you've backed everything up, double-checked that you have it all backed up, and checked again that you've backed up everything that you need.

You can set MSE to auto send you an email when you get replies. FAR easier than looking for your post manually
Follow the above advice re hijack this. Anything else would be guesswork
And no, more RAM wont make a jot of difference:idea:0 -
My Inspiron became slow and chuggy and I had to switch off automatic updates otherwise the first ten minutes were so slow I gave up. Fine now.
