My daughter is currently doing Japanese Studies and is in her 2nd year, in her 3rd year she will go to Japan to study as part of her course.
The only problem now being we are expected to pay for a 12 month return air ticket in a few months and her grant was reduced by almost £500 this year as they said they overpaid last year so she is effectively down buy almost £1000 on last year. She just managed to get by without having an overdraft last year but now has one of a £1000 and only £100 of that left!! - Her rent is £350 per month so the grant she gets now barely covers living expenses!!
I know the "Bank of Mum & Dad" will try help - but we don't have that kind of spare cash available!
Does anyone know if there is anything out there to help with flight costs?

Has she spoken to her university department? They're likely to be able to point her in the direction of available grants and may be able to help her themselves.
Is it a compulsory part of her degree programme or an optional year?0 -
It is a major part of her course - and bursurys are available from some of the uni's in Japan - but only for the students who get the higher grades and although my daughter tries - she realises she is not one of the ones!
I keep asking her to find out more - but she just says "I dunno"! So I wondered if there was any kind of external help........Growing old is manditory, Growing up is optional! :j0 -

It doesn't sound as if she's particularly motivated - does she actually want to go?
You mention a grant - doesn't she get a loan as well?0 -
She needs to speak to her own university, they usually offer some kind of support for years abroad. A part time or summer job would also help a lot.0
