PC World!!!!!

Hey all. Got the right hump right now lol.

On Friday i bought a refurbished Packard Bell iXtreme x6620 from the PC world website for £449 It arrived via DHL today. When I opened the box, the packing material was crumbling and brokenm but it said the correct model number on it, as it did also on the machine itself, I noticed it has 4 USB ports instead of the 6 that there was meant to be, and that started alarm bells ringing. Then i noticed on the rear of the machine an official packard bell sticker which says 'iXtreme M5722'. Then when i flipped it over, it says on the base 'PC World non pristine stock - EX DISPLAY'!! When i dug further into the box, i found that they had supplied me with a cheapo 'Trust' keyboard and mouse, which is obvously not what i expected considering this was meant to be a PC that was returned, and resold cheaper. I rang CS and the guy on the phone was very helpful, but all i could do is return the pc and get a refund, which i dont really want to do, considering the spec and what it would cost if i bought it new. I even asked if i could take a partial refund so the price i actually paid reflected what i got, but no joy.

I have of course emailed the guy in charge of DSG, so i'm hoping he can help me out with this?

i guess we'll see.

Although I agree in part with your issues, two points stand out. The first is that unless explicitly stated, refubished does not have to mean a customer return, an ex display model can be refurbished can it not? Secondly, when the problem with the wrong model and keyboard was pointed out, they have offered a full refund which I think is fair. It's up to you if you don't wish to do that. Having said that, to send out the wrong model with the wrong keyboard does not exactly inspire confidence!

  • yeah, i can see your point with those 2 points. It wouldn't be so bad, but with the case showing both those model numbers, which one is the pc? Also, i bought this machine because it has 6 USB ports on the back, when in reality, it only has 4. I have opened up the machine and it looks good inside. I'm gonna go down Currys and see if there is a similar spec pc which i can exchange for, failing that i might even keep it. Its just that model number which is bugging me, and what is worrying me, is it ex-display and then been refurbed which i dont mind seeing as it has such a great spec, or has been taken off the display where 100's of customers have been playing with it, cleaned inside and out, and then resold that way!

Keyboards are not expensive plus you can get USB extensions that allow more ports if needed, also a standard mouse is cheap too. Have you switched it on and tried yet, is the spec what it says it is etc?

no, i haven't turned it on yet to check it all out, as they told me on the phone that it is 'not recommended' if i wanted to return it!

How many USB ports are at the front?

Did the website say what brand of Keyboard & Mouse you'd get?

  • Exactly what would you like the CEO to do?
They've offered a refund, and you have the DSR protection too :)

I think the thing to do here is look how much the lower spec is actually worth. How it compares to the better spec'd machine (processor, graphics, hdds etc) and then work out a)is it what you wanted in a pc and b) is it actually worth the amount you bought it for.

If yes for both, keep it, if not get a refund, but theres not much else you can do
Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!
  • The spec is important. What graphics card or integrated graphics does it have? What CPU model? What hard drives and size? Is it worth the money with the spec you got?

Keyboards and mouse are nothing to be concerned about and can be replaced. USB ports can also be increased using a USB hub which can provide many extra usb ports (6 commonly for a few quid) although they do share one port so are not suitable for multiple higher usage devices which would use up the available bandwidth of one USB port.

Hadn't seen the bit about the different PC before.

The M5722 has 6GB RAM / GT230 GPU vs the X6622's 4GB RAM / GT320 GPU. First of all, check the spec of the PC you have against the x6620 listed on Currys website, and then decide if you might not want the M5722 first - more RAM might be more beneficial than a better GPU.

If it's not, then take them up on their refund offer...

Everything else on the PC's look the same (Q8300, 1TB)
