loft insulation

just moved into a house and in the loft it needs a top up of insulation.
Its partially boarded in the middle section.Would it be ok to lay the top up over the top of the boarded section as I wont be using loft for storage and dont really want to hump all the loft boards around, and the re-lay them which would probably squash the insulation anyhow.
