Can I travel on an earlier train than the one I have booked?

    I often buy the most restricted ticket for maximum savings that allows me to travel on just one train at a set time but I just sit on any unreserved seat even though I have reserved seat and carriage number. The guard has never questioned why I am not sitting in my designated seat.
