How do I measure a laptop to get a bag of the correct size?

Hi
(This probably sounds like a really stupid question :o)

My boss has asked me to order her a new bag for her laptop this afternoon.
No opportunity to go into a store, must be ordered online, so I need to get the size right.

Where laptop measurements are stated, is this side to side? or do I measure the screen diagonally, like a TV?

The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite Pro, I've tried looking on Toshiba's website but it would seem they come in different sizes so not very helpful!

The laptop measures approx 16 inches side to side, approx 19 inches digonally - what size do I order?

Thank you for any help

Screen sizes are the diagonal of the actual screen not including the surround and most bags are sold to fit a particular screen size. There is usually enough fudge factor for it not to matter if it's a 4x3 or widescreen machine although it is still worth knowing and checking.

I'd guess it's a 17inch screen. There'll probably be a model number on the bottom and they sometimes include the screen size in the numbers or you can google the model rather than the generic class.

Thanks kwikbreaks, I've found the model number and the Toshiba website says it is, as you guessed, a 17 inch widescreen.

You might want to ask your boss if she wants a bag with a pocket to store documents as well?

I have found that it is a matter of luck, because laptops might say they are 15.6" (say), but the variation in the width and the height depend on a) the size of the bezel round the screen, and b) the screen geometry: 16x9 or 16x10 or even 5x4...

If she is so busy that she has to pay a lackey to do her shopping then she has the budget to pay a few hundred for a bag.

She is Headteacher of a primary school, currently teaching full time in addition to doing her own job, and school office staff are responsible for ordering school equipment.

You plainly know nothing about school budgets!
