Tiling over glossed wall

Have to tile over a glossed wall its had quite a few coats in the past. The special adhesive for tiling over other tiles or glass is really expensive so is there any way to make the gloos more easy to stick to apart from scoring it and rubbing it down?
Thanx

  • scratching the glossed wall would be the best/cheapest bet
  • You either do nothing to the wall and use a more expensive adhesive, or use a bit of elbow grease to rough up the wall and PVA bond it.
    I had a plan..........its here somewhere.
  • I agree. rough it up with a stanley knife and brush/roll a PVA solution should do the trick
  • If its sound paint then why not tile over it? If you want the suction to increase then why would you PVA/unibond after scoring it? If you really want to score it then scrapers and knives are really hard work on sound gloss. You can pick up cheap 4" angle grinders for a tenner that would make light work of scoring it. Use separate adhesive and grout. The seperate stuff is far moe sticky!

    Because i said so:D

If you get any moisture behind the tiles, it will change properties and try and turn back into a liquid

    didn't know that. thnx
  • The PVA is for the purpose of sealing the wall, prior to tiling, especially having scored it to get a good key.
The only way water is getting behind the tiles is if either the grout comes out or the silicon sealant fails. The PVA would not restrict the wall from soaking up the water but the gloss paint will.
The tiles would need to be sitting in hot water for some time for the adhesive to revert back to its liquid state.
