Extending an existing dormer

I have viewed a cottage style house in which the 2nd floor is in the loft space with dormer windows. The existing dormers are quite small which restrict headroom and make the bedrooms feel quite small, if these were widened the rooms would create create extra space.
Will this require planning permission and if anyone has extended existing dormers what did it cost?

What have neighbouring properties done?0

Nothing but that might be because all similar properties seem to be occupied by elderly people.0

PP is normally needed if the outside shape of the house is going to be changed by your proposed dormers. You could phone the planning department informally to ask what their attitude might be.0

Definitely make the call because some friends had the same problem in the next village to me. They had plans drawn up to extend the loft room, change the windows there, remodel the ground floor to fit in a nice staircase etc. The plans were rejected. There is the possibility of some small-scale changes but they got permission to extend the house to the back instead so are happy.0

Thanks for the advice, I'll phone the council tomorrow and ask.
As for price, does anyone have any ideas? I have been googling around but all I can see are estimates for full loft conversions which run into 10's of thousands. I want to get an idea if this is an affordable option or not, what I want to do is extend two dormers into one large one and open up the room.0
