Software to monitor Hard Drive access

Recently I've found my hard drive clicking away more and more. I've ran anti spyware, and virus checkers, which found nothing unusual. I've disabled the indexing service, and my memory usage is fine, at least 1gb ram unused and makes no difference if virtual memory is set to 0 or 2gb. Although I'm on a network, there are no other devices connected through share or http services.

I'm guessing that its some windows service running (on XP), although I haven't ruled out a possibility that the hard drive could be on the way out.

Anyone know of any (free) software that could identify what process is causing the hard drive to thrash around, or what else could cause it?

  • If you press "control-Alt-delete" (at the same time) this will open Windows task manager. One of the sub windows in this is "Processes" and if you scroll down the list it will show everything that is running on your computer and the percentage of the CPU that it is taking.

If it's not swapping, security software might be the culprit, post a hijackthis log

Already tried that, nothing out of the ordinary, just the standard processes and small cpu usage.

Anyway, using Process Monitor, I narrowed it down to the tortoise SVN client I use which is constantly updating the shell, looks like latest patch has stopped it and now silent again. Thanks for your help!
