Debt Collection Agency for Student Loan????

Options
Not sure whether this is the right place to post this but I am completely baffled. I graduated in July 2008 and my student loan repayments have been automatically coming out of my salary every month since April 09. Anyway, today I have received a letter from a debt collection agency stating final demand for £2,000 owed to the Student Loan Company??

I have never received a letter from them before, nor one from the loan company to say that I owe money which is separate from my standard repayments.

I am pretty worried as obviously these collectors have bought the 'debt' from the slc for whatever reason and I don't want to get any adverse credit etc. I just don't know where to start to try and sort it out?

If you've been paying it they may be trying it on. Check out "Debt Problems" on the main site, there's a section on being chased for a debt that isn't yours. The debt free wannabe forum has lots of threads about Debt collection agencies.

I'm going to say this actually relates to a grant overpayment, and not a loan.

Post up a scan of the letter, removing all personal details but leaving the text from them.
  • Taiko is probably correct, the only way this could be legit is if you were overpaid a grant and you've been ignoring the letters about repaying that.

If it is about unpaid loans, its 99% certain its fake(or wrong), as it sounds like you havent broken any T&C's. Considering how the system works, SLC could only now be seeing the payments from HMRC for the 09/10 tax year.

My advice is phone up SLC to verify what they think your situation is. Have your payslips to hand, as they are your evidence that you've paid.

Having payslips ready will make no difference to grant overpayment as it is not recovered via the normal repayment system. Best to call and find out you may be able to sort out a payment plan with them.
  • Cheers everyone - I will give the SLC a ring. I suspect it is a grant overpayment then seeing as this is completely different from the loan situation, but I genuinely haven't received anything from the SLC in all this time to say that I have had an overpayment etc etc - weird.
