If you don't use a resident virus scanner, you would never know if you are infected or not until it's too late, malwarebytes is not a virus scanner, it's a tool to get rid of common and stubborn infections that you AV has missed. Infections can happen without human intervention. An encrypted file has to unencrypt to run.

Those test results and scores look skewed to me, and all tests should be taken with a pinch of salt because they only test a subset of whats out there, the results from month to month are all over the place, other testing organisations give a very different result.

I read most of the virus threads whenever I see them and yes AVG seems to let a lot through (hence why I said it was poo-pooed on here). That's why I was surprised to see it score so highly in the tests.

Sorry, I got the wrong end of the stick.

For a minute there I thought you were praising AVG
  • that would never happen:D

I did use AVG a few years ago, I've tried MSE, Avira, Avast and Panda. I like Panda at the mo because it is lightweight, but it doesn't do a very good job at excluding files so I have to keep my hacky type stuff on a separate VM.
