XP user passwords and files

got a friends hard drive, someone has managed to delete windows

trying to access some files can copy them using a boot disk but cannot open them , assume this is because they had a log in password for their user profile.....I'm assuming there is no way round this ???

Right click on the file/folder in question and choose properties, then select the security tab, click advanced and the the owner tab, select your user account from "Change Owner to" box and choose OK.

Then on the security tab add yourself to the list with full control. That should get you in.

This assumes you're using NTFS on your hard drive. However if your friend was foolish enough to use XP's encrypted file system and didn't setup the recovery user then no the files are lost.

and he is only able to access the drive via DOS according to his post.

@Browntoa when you say you can't open the files, exactly what happens - is there an error message?

I thought you said you had his hard drive? In which case have you plugged it into your PC? Or by hard drive do you mean his computer/base unit?

Sounds like your boot disk only supports limited ntfs functionality. Try making a boot CD from your computer using BartPE http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ it makes a Windows style boot CD that support NTFS.

something does not seem right with the whole set-up...it's taking FOREVER to boot up with any disk in...I'm running boot CD's on mine to access the data via a USB 2 IDE cable connector and it all runs fine....think the motherboard is fried on the other PC as it was full of more fluff than my Belly button !!! and I only cleaned it out about 9 months ago...some people live like pigs :(
