disabled free road tax

We currently get free road tax and my daughter who gets full rate DLA recently got a new award letter along with letter to say we may be able to claim free road tax it says we need DLA403 leaflet but dont appear to have it

We have an certificate to say we can get road tax free but it runs out on 15/01/11, the car tax is due end of Jan can we apply for road tax exemption before the certificate runs out or do we need a new certificate before then

Only other thing we got is a one page declaration where we fill in registered keeper and who has the disability

I just want to sort this out before December as I may forget to do so

Thanks

How to claim an exemption from vehicle tax

To claim an exemption from vehicle tax you must be receiving at least one of the following:
    • higher rate of the mobility component of Disability Living Allowance
    • War Pensioners Mobility Supplement
If you claim Disability Living Allowance

If you currently get a free Vehicle Tax Disc using the Certificate DLA404, you should continue to use the certificate DLA404 at the Post Office®, DVLA local office on online to get your free vehicle tax disc. When your Certificate DLA404 is full you should contact the Disability Living Allowance Unit and ask for a Certificate of Entitlement to carry on getting your vehicle tax discs.
    The address is:
Disability Living Allowance Unit, Warbreck House, Warbreck Hill,
    Blackpool FY20YE
    Telephone: 0845 712 3456
    Textphone: 0845722 4433
If you are waiting to hear about a decision on your Disability Living Allowance claim, the Disability Living Allowance unit will send you a Certificate of Entitlement to claim a free vehicle tax disc with your decision notice. They will do this only if you are entitled to the Higher Rate Mobility Component with your award.
The leaflet DLA403 will be included with your Certificate of Entitlement. This will tell you how to get your free vehicle tax disc.

The Disability Living Allowance Unit will then automatically send you a Certificate of Entitlement every year to get your free vehicle tax disc. The unit will only do this if you continue to be entitled to the higher rate mobility component.

I got the form dla404 but it runs out on 15 Jan and car tax is due end of Jan

I got a new form which I signed but it refers to a leaflet dla403 it doesn't say what to do with the form I filled in I assume I send it to the Blackpool address

We do have a certificate of entitlement to claim for free car tax and it comes with a serial number

It doesn't look like the old certificate we got when it was stamped at post office

This last time I did my road tax online, you just need the Ref off your exemption cert.

Very quick and easy to do, nothing to pay, it arrived in the post a few days later.
  • You need to renew your DLA404 prior to taxing the vehicle as it does not cover the period for when your tax is due to start.

You need to return it to the DLA in Blackpool, address used to be at bottom of form. Give them (DLA not DVLA!) a ring to check the procedure if you are unsure. Do this ASAP as you don't want the hassle of not having back in time and having to pay for tax!

  • The DWP now have a new system for DLA claimants taxing cars in the disabled class. DLA 404's are no longer being issued.

DO NOT SEND THE CERTIFICATE BACK TO BLACKPOOL!!!

The document you have is the new style road tax exemption certificate (replaces the DLA404). You take it to the Post Office/DVLA office with your usual car documents and obtain free tax disc. The certificate will last for a year and DLA will automatically send you a new one prior to it's expiry.
