My work is SO not OS

We're moving to new swanky offices next week, which are supposedly all singing and all dancing and guess what? NO staff fridges, microwaves or kettles. INstead we are supposed to use their damn cafe every day. How disgusting is that? Surely there are health and safety issues for people who bring in sandiwiches that are warm and soggy by lunchtime? Warm tuna salad anyone?

ARGGhhhhHH!

  • are they saying that there's to be no fridges/kettles at all, or can you bring in your own?

in my office we're not provided with staff facilities, but we're welcome to provide our own and have a fridge, toaster and kettle.
  • I bring my own food into work, however I don't use the company fridge - I would rather take my chances and leave it in my bag - the fridge is shocking

Surely that's not very time efficient if the staff can't even make their own cup of tea or coffee? Going and queueing in a canteen for a cuppa will waste tons of time!

I have worked in a place like this - a mini cool bag and/or a flask are your best bet.
  • flask for tea or coffee

food flask for soups / hot stuff

freezer packs and cool bags for cold stuff.

It's so annoying - we were told that its the management/ building owners who imposed it and it was because of safety ha ha. ie it saves the money by not hiving to get every piece of equipmetn - kettle, etc tested every year.

IT's new management policy. Not allowed to bring our own in. We're having to dump the fridge and microwave we've got now before we move.

I suspect there will mass outrage; I work in the media and people get quite sniffy when you take their comforts away. Not that having access to a fridge is a comfort, more of a basic necessity I'd say. Shocking treatment.

Yeah, I could do the flasks and coolbags thing.

But that's just a load more stuff to carry on the tube every day and the thing is, what a bloody faff when we've always been able to just use the facilities - I really can't see myself remembering to do the flask of tea every day, and as for re-freezing freezer packs each night - argh!

Bring your own in.....but leave it in a car? So whenever you want a drink just go out to your flask rather then their ever so 'cheap' cafe. Do the same at lunch.

If enough people do it they'll soon realise how daft it is.

We have a fridge (though like SOMO1 I don't use it cos it's vile), a wall-mounted kettle thing, and a microwave. About a year ago, an edict was issued by email from our Chief Operating Officer saying we weren't allowed to cook stuff with strong smells as it didn't give the right impression to visitors  (I work in an office with an open-plan kitchenette on each floor, which could easily be walled in and separated from the rest of the office - but no!) We don't have a canteen and local takeaway food comes at Central London prices.

Everybody ignored her and now she's resigned :D

Re: the flask idea, i you don't own a flask, you might be interested to know that Tesco have discontinued their 500ml stainless steel flask and are selling off the remaining stock for £2.36 each.
